Mumps
What is it?
Recognisable sign of mumps is swelling in front of the ear and over the angle of the jaw. The corresponding gland on the other side may also swell later. Mumps is an infectious disease which may occur in epidemics and mainly affects children. Along with the swollen glands there may be earache. Since the incubation period is 15-21 days before the visible symptoms appear, it is impossible to stop the infection from spreading. Adult men who catch mumps can suffer painful complications, for example, inflammation of the testicles. In girls inflammation of the ovaries can cause abdominal pain. In rare cases, encephalitis or meningitis can result.
Symptoms:
Facial swelling, earache, sometimes abdominal pain in girls, sometimes inflamed testicles in men.
Conventional Practice:
Doctors recommend immunisation with MMR vaccine against measles, rubella and mumps for all babies during their first year. There is no special cure for the disease, but a few days of rest and if necessary, pills may be prescribed to reduce fever and ease discomfort.
Alternative Treatments:
  Herbal Medicine
The medicinal use of herbs is said to be as old as mankind itself. Tribes still use their traditional knowledge of plant and their healing properties passed on from generation to generation. The armies of slave workers who laboured to build the Egyptian pyramids took a daily ration of garlic to ward off the pestilential fevers and infections that were rife at the time. More Info
