What is it?
There are different types of arthritis, all involving some disorder or inflammation of the joints. The most common forms are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout caused by crystals of a body waste, uric acid, collecting in the sufferers joints.
Osteoarthritis causes swelling pain or stiffness and sometimes deforms the joint.
The parts most affected are the hips, knee spine and hands. Women are more at risk than men. Rheumatoid arthritis also affects more women than men. Symptoms include swelling, stiffness and pain in the joints; red, shiny skin over the joints and general feeling of stiffness and restricted movement.

Doctors have made comparison test of, acupuncture and conventional treatments for arthritic pain in joints such as the knee, back and shoulder, and have found it to be as effective as claimed.
Doctors can only treat the symptoms. Drugs are prescribed to relieve pain and swelling, and physiotherapy is often recommended to keep the joints flexible and strengthen weak muscles. In severe cases, arthritic joints can often be replaced with artificial ones.
