Arteries (Hardening)
What is it?
Hardening of the arteries occurs as you grow older and your arteries lose some of their original elasticity and flexibility.

Hardening of the arteries, known as arteriosclerosis, combined with stress, smoking, an unhealthy fatty diet or high blood pressure, can become a serious condition. Symptoms of severe arteriosclerosis include chest pains, leg pains and temporary disturbances of sight, speech, balance and use of the limbs. A common cause of artery damage is when arteriosclerosis is associated with the high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Arteriosclerosis tends to run in families and affects men more than women. Warning: See your GP if you have symptoms indicating hardening of the arteries.

Symptoms:
Chest pains, leg pains, disturbances of sight, speech, balance and use of the limbs.
Conventional Practice:
Doctors agree that not smoking, switching to low-fat diets, taking moderate exercise and adopting a less stressful lifestyle will help many people with arteriosclerosis. Conventional medicine can offer drugs to reduce high blood pressure and surgery to replace blocked sections of artery with pieces taken from healthy veins.
Alternative Treatments:
  Herbal Medicine
The medicinal use of herbs is said to be as old as mankind itself. Tribes still use their traditional knowledge of plant and their healing properties passed on from generation to generation. The armies of slave workers who laboured to build the Egyptian pyramids took a daily ration of garlic to ward off the pestilential fevers and infections that were rife at the time. More Info
