Agoraphobia
What is it?
An irrational fear of open spaces. The term also applies to acute anxiety suffered by those who dread finding themselves in public places. Faced with such situations, they become agitated break into sweat and their pulse rate soars. Agoraphobics will go to any length to avoid public places. Sometimes agoraphobia develops in people suffering from panic attacks.
Symptoms:
Fear of open spaces, acute anxiety, dread in public places, sweat, pulse rate soars, agitated.
Conventional Practice:
Some doctors use methods similar to those of alternative therapists. However, when necessary a general practitioner will also prescribe tranquillisers. The patient may be referred to a psychiatrist or psychotherapist.
