Raynaud’s Disease
What is it?
Sentivity to the cold can cause this condition, in which the fingers, hands and sometime feet suddenly turn pale and numb. In severe cases they may turn blue and there may be burning pains. In most cases the disease is caused by the contraction, due to cold, of the small arteries supplying blood to the surface of the skin. Occasionally it can result from the vibration caused by using power tools or drills, from drugs prescribed for other ailments, from the pressure of gripping or carrying something, or from cigarette smoking.
Pale and numb fingers, hands and feet, blue fingers and burning pains.
Conventional Practice:
If the patient’s symptoms are extreme, and do not respond to ordinary warming, a doctor may prescribe drugs to stimulate the circulation. He or she may also arrange for X-rays and blood tests. A drug called iloprost which is given by infusion with a drip. By mimicking a natural hormone, prostacylin, in the blood vessels, it prevents blood cells from clotting.
