Sun Burn
What is it?
Prolonged exposure to the ultraviolet(UV) radiation in sunlight produces this burning sensation of the skin. There are three types of UV radiation: UVA is the gentlest; while it may cause a suntan, it rarely burns. However, it does penetrate deeply, and may contribute to premature ageing of the skin and increased risk of skin cancer. UVB radiation is more dangerous; it tans and can cause severe burning. UVC can cause ageing and skin cancer. More severe sunburn can cause pain and fluid-filled blisters, followed by peeling of the outer layer of the skin. Choose sun lotions and creams carefully, and read the information given on the pack before buying. The strongest protection comes from the opaque ‘sunshade’ creams containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which block out most UVB and UVC, and much UVA radiation. UV radiation is greater at high altitudes where the thinner air filters out less sunlight. Be even more careful if you ski. Snow reflects about 90 percent of the light that falls on it.
Symptoms:
Burning sensation of the skin, fluid-filled blisters, peeling of the outer layer of the skin, premature ageing of the skin.
Conventional Practice:
Treat sunburn as you would any other burn. Soothe the skin with a cool shower, take painkillers such as paracetamol, and have extra drinks to replace fluid loss.
Alternative Treatments:
  Herbal Medicine
The medicinal use of herbs is said to be as old as mankind itself. Tribes still use their traditional knowledge of plant and their healing properties passed on from generation to generation. The armies of slave workers who laboured to build the Egyptian pyramids took a daily ration of garlic to ward off the pestilential fevers and infections that were rife at the time. More Info
