What is it?
Children are the most common victims of tonsillitis, a highly infectious inflammation of the tonsils. Tonsillitis is usually caused by a virus against which children have not had time to develop a resistance. However, it may also be the result of bacteria called streptococci. Streptococcal tonsillitis with a rash which first appears on the neck and chest is called scarlet fever. Tonsillitis tends to strike suddenly. If the symptoms last for more than three days, or if the sufferer starts coughing up green or yellow phlegm, seek medical attention.
Inflammation of the tonsils, coughing up green or yellow phlegm, rash on neck and chest.
Conventional Practice:
If tonsillitis has been caused by bacteria, and the symptoms are prolonged or the patient is ill with a raised temperature, a GP may prescribe an antibiotic. If the disease is the result of a virus, antibiotics will not be effective. For treatment at home, doctors will advise patients to drink plenty of fluids, take painkillers and go to bed.
Alternative Treatments:
  Herbal Medicine
The medicinal use of herbs is said to be as old as mankind itself. Tribes still use their traditional knowledge of plant and their healing properties passed on from generation to generation. The armies of slave workers who laboured to build the Egyptian pyramids took a daily ration of garlic to ward off the pestilential fevers and infections that were rife at the time. More Info
Homoeopathy aims to treat the whole person. Illness is seen as a sign of disharmony or inner imbalance. More Info
