Colitis
What is it?
Chronic inflammation of the large bowel. Symptoms include pain in the abdomen and intermittent bouts of blood-streaked diarrhoea. If severe, or if the condition persists seek medical advice.
Symptoms:
abdominal pain, blood-streaked diarrhoea and inflammation of the large bowel.
Conventional Practice:
In general, doctors tend to view ulcerative colitis more seriously than do alternative practitioners. Occasionally, an operation to remove part of the colon may be advised. A doctor will prescribe steriods to reduce intensity of attacks. He will also stress the importance of rest and relaxation.
Alternative Treatments:
  Acupressure
Acupressure is a mixture of massage and acupuncture, and is thought to be the forerunner of acupuncture. Instead of inserting needles, practitioners use firm thumb or fingertip massage on pain relieving pressure points. Acupressure is used to balance a flow of energy called Qi, which is believed to run through invisible channels known as meridians. More Info
  Acupuncture
An ancient Chinese therapy, patients are treated by sticking needles into their skin at particular points. These acupuncture points lie along invisible energy channels called meridians. The needles are said to unblock a flow of energy (called Qi) through the meridians. More Info
  Naturopathy
Naturopathy has concentrated on helping the body to cure itself. It aims to do this by means of various therapies, chiropractic, diets and dieting, exercise, hydrotherapy, massage, osteopathy, relaxation and breathing, and yoga. It also encourages people to think positively in terms of good health. More Info
  Herbal Medicine
The medicinal use of herbs is said to be as old as mankind itself. Tribes still use their traditional knowledge of plant and their healing properties passed on from generation to generation. The armies of slave workers who laboured to build the Egyptian pyramids took a daily ration of garlic to ward off the pestilential fevers and infections that were rife at the time. More Info
