What is it?
Symptoms of food poisoning are vomiting, diarrhoea and cramp-like abdominal pains often worse just before diarrhoea. The usual cause is germs that inflame the lining of the stomach and intestines. Reheating or only half cooking food encourages the growth of bacteria such as salmonella, staphlococcus, the commonest causes of food poisoning. Lysteria, another bacterium, can be caught from soft cheeses and pate. Campylobacter can be caught from contaminated poultry, fish or unpasteurised milk and may cause bloody diarrhoea. Other causes include rotaviruses, which are spread by direct contact with either vomit or diarrhoea. The main danger of food poisoning is fluid loss. Consult a doctor if abdominal pain is severe.

Doctors would advise you to avoid all solid foods, and replace lost fluid by drinking small amounts of water or diluted fruit juice regularly. Drinks of sugar and dioralyte will help to replace chemicals lost through vomiting and diarrhoea.
