Heart Disorders
What is it?
Plaques of the fatty substance cholesterol are deposited on the walls of blood vessels from early adulthood onwards. Eventually this deposit may block the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle causing disease. Partial blockage may result in angina. If a blood clot lodges suddenly in a coronary artery and blocks it completely, part of the heart is starved of oxygen causing a heart attack. In old age, the heart becomes tired and susceptible to both heart failure and heart blockage. Heart valves may also become ineffective later in life, often as a result of rheumatic fever. Symptoms are breathlessness and water retention when the ankles swell towards evening. Cardiomyopathy is general weakness and enlargement of the heart. There are many causes and the condition can develop in any age. Warning Anyone with a heart disorder should see their doctor before undertaking any alternative treatments.
Symptoms:
Breathlessness, water retention, angina, tiredness, chest pains, swolen ankles.
Conventional Practice:
Doctors encourage their patients to exercise regularly, eat sensibly and avoid smoking. Early detection and treatment of high blood pressure, and raised blood cholesterol is also encouraged. Modern medical treatment for heart attack includes clot busting drugs such as streptokinase which reduce damage to the heart muscle.
