Hives
What is it?
Itchy red weals on the skin are the major symptom, also known as urticaria or nettlerash. They can appear anywhere on the body and vary in size. Sometimes the weals disappear after only a few minutes, but in other cases they can last for days or even weeks and may move to different parts of the body. Hives is the result of histamines and other substances being released by the body into the skin. Often the cause is an allegry to certain foods or drugs. Sensitivity to cold, house dust, pollen or even sunlight can also trigger an attack. Hives is not dangerous unless swellings around the mouth or tongue make breathing difficult. See a doctor if this happens, or if itching is intense.
Symptoms:
Itchy red weals, nettlerash.
Conventional Practice:
Symptoms are treated with antihistamines such as terfenadine. Doctors also try to help patients to pinpoint the cause of the hives. Where a swollen tongue or mouth prevents breathing, an adrenaline injection can be administered.
Alternative Treatments:
  Herbal Medicine
The medicinal use of herbs is said to be as old as mankind itself. Tribes still use their traditional knowledge of plant and their healing properties passed on from generation to generation. The armies of slave workers who laboured to build the Egyptian pyramids took a daily ration of garlic to ward off the pestilential fevers and infections that were rife at the time. More Info
