What is it?
Anxiety built up by conflicts during the formative years is the usual cause of hysteria. Susceptible people under stress can become hysterical to avoid facing a difficult situation or to divert attention from what they see as their inadequacy. The subconscious mind has converted the individual’s anxiety into physical symptoms such as uncontrollable screaming and thrashing about. An accurate diagnosis by a doctor is essential in cases which are thought to be hysterical symptoms, or those of a real physical ailment. Tranquillisers will give relief for a time while psychotherapy tries to get to the root of the problem. Hypnotherapy has proved a successful form of psychotherapy for many hysteria cases.
