Many of us do yoga at least a few times a week, but maybe not all of us are getting the most out of it.

There’s more to yoga than just standing on your hands. Yoga can help you relieve stress, energize your body and mind, and even help with weight loss. As a bonus, you’ll be better at taking care of yourself and have more energy for everything you have planned. The key is to go beyond the traditional poses and try some of the new variations. Here are 5 fun new ways to spice up your practice.

Yoga has been around for thousands of years, and yet most folks have never heard of it. It is often thought of as a spiritual or meditative practice, but that is only part of the practice. Yoga also involves exercise for maintaining a healthy weight, flexibility and strength, and to accomplish these goals, there are hundreds of different poses that can be done.

There is nothing worse in asana practice than feeling bored and disinterested. And if you practice often or at home, it can be pretty easy to get stuck in a yoga routine.

Instead of trying to come up with a whole new set of yoga poses or completely upending your practice, here are a few variations of fun yoga poses that will keep your practice interesting and fun.

1. Connecting triangle

The triangle pose is one that most people are very comfortable in. With this option you will be positioned in the same way as with traditional printing. The front of the heel is in line with the arch of the back, the forearm is next to the foot on a block resting on the shin or ankle, the side of the body is extended lengthwise and the chest is turned slightly towards the ceiling.

Then, instead of pulling your arm up or down by your ear, reach behind your back and grab the inside of your front leg. This increases the rotation of the upper body, which opens the heart and chest. That extra twist adds a great chest and neck stretch that most of us could use!

2. Bound crescent

The crescent moon is already a pretty complicated pose for most people, but if you’re getting a little tired of the common expression, you might like the linked version.

As usual, start in the half-moon position: Place the forearm on the ground about 30 cm in front of the front leg and bend over the forearm until the back leg is off the ground, parallel to the ground, with the back leg bent. Then take your top hand and place it behind your back, again looking for the inside of your standing leg.

This small variation adds an extra challenge to your balance and opens up your upper body and shoulders.

3. Funky Boy Dog

This is one of my favorite variations of the downward dog position. Start with the downward dog pose, feet hip-width apart, sit bones toward the room where the wall and ceiling meet behind you. Straighten your spine, shoulders down and away from your ears, and spread your fingers on the mat.

Then shift your weight to your right leg and lift your left leg up and behind you. Let the left knee bend, let the left leg go to the side of the chair and open the hip to the left. Then lower your right forearm onto the mat, while keeping your left arm straight.

This increases the sideways stretch you feel in this pose and helps you keep your balance. Make sure you practice both sides before moving on.

4. Warrior One Wristbands

The First Warrior is already a posture that opens the heart slightly, and this variation will enhance that effect by opening the chest and shoulders more deeply.

Your lower body will be as in the traditional expression: the back leg is placed at a 30 degree angle, the front leg is in a 90 degree lunge, the hips point forward and the ribs move up and away from the hips. From there, raise your hands and cross your wrists so that your palms are touching in a prayerful pose.

Then lean back slightly and open your heart to the ceiling. Crossing the wrists promotes deeper relaxation of the upper body.

5. Squat with pull-up

Finally, this squat variation is really great for the whole body. It strengthens your hips and legs, stretches your spine and neck, and makes you feel like a million bucks.

Squat down and keep your feet together or your thighs (or further apart!) apart. Try to let your hips fall to the ground. Then stretch your arms out in front of you and cross your wrists so that your palms are touching. From there, lower the arms down and forward to the ground, lowering the chest and head to the heart. Pull the back of your heart back while stretching your arms forward. Stay as long as you like!
