The question at the heart of this question is whether or not it is healthy to drink diet soda on a low-carb diet. The answer is, “It depends.” If you don’t have the carb cravings and are not following a very low-carb diet, you can probably drink diet soda and not have any problems. However, if you do have the carb cravings and are following a very low-carb diet, it is not recommended to drink any diet sodas.

In the past, two tablespoons of diet soda contained the same amount of sugar as two-and-a-half teaspoons of regular soda. But the average American now drinks about nine teaspoons of sugar a day, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new Dietary Guidelines for Americans . On a low-carb diet, can you drink diet soda?

I’ve been drinking Diet Coke for years and consider it to be one of my few pleasures in life. I only drink one can each day, and there are days when I don’t drink anything at all. Is it considered a sugar addiction to consume one to four Diet Cokes each week? I can live without sweets and bread, but I can’t seem to stop drinking Diet Coke. Please advise how I may give up this pleasure.

Are there any ramifications from this? If not, you may do it, although I believe diet drinks are chemical sugar water; read my response regarding artificial sweeteners for more information. I am opposed to it from a health standpoint.

Cravings for carbs and sugar?

It always occurs after an hour or two of sleep. I’ve dropped almost 130 pounds (59 kg) and kept it off for 5.5 years, yet when I wake up with these cravings, I’m totally helpless against them, as you would imagine. Because my wife isn’t on board with LCHF, I constantly have access to a broad range of junk food and end up with severe aches and pains as well as stomach discomfort in the days thereafter. It doesn’t happen very frequently, but when it does, it’s terrifying.

I’d make sure there was no “junk/drug food” in my house at all. If other members of your family desire it, ask them to hide/lock it. I’m not kidding when I say that. Solicit their assistance and support.

Is this something that occurs after you go to bed at night or after you take a nap during the day? Then you must have a strategy in place ahead of time. I recommend taking 1 teaspoon glutamine powder in half a glass of water first thing in the morning, followed by 1 tablespoon coconut oil in a glass of warm water. That’s a fantastic way to get rid of cravings. I’m assuming you consume a healthy diet throughout the day? To begin, give this a go.

Do you believe that sugar addiction may lead to type 1 diabetes via stress-induced binge eating?

I’m no longer hooked to sugar, but I recall a time when sugar consumption was a stress reliever. It was insane, and it didn’t help at all!


I haven’t seen any study, but given sugar’s strong inflammatory properties, I wouldn’t be shocked if that’s the case. Type 1 diabetes, according to some experts, is an inflammation. And you’re right: sugar isn’t a stress reliever.
