In the past, I’ve spent thousands of dollars on acne treatments and medications that I’ve never really been happy with; I’ve tried every product, tried every type of acne, and tried just about every diet out there. And now, finally, I’ve found something that’s helped me to cure my acne.

I’ve had acne since I was in high school, but I didn’t really ever think much about it until a few years ago. I was nervous about getting a pimple, and I had bad experiences with other dermatologists in the past. I asked my dad for some advice, and he said to try taking a supplement that he had heard about called Proactive.

For the first time in 15 years I’m free of acne. I don’t know if it’s because I’m 25 and am finally old enough to get acne, or because I’m starving myself and exercising more, or because I’m finally taking my skin seriously, but I’m elated that my skin is clear. I was so ashamed of my acne. So many people had acne, and it used to make me feel bad and think I was dirty, and I was always trying to find something to cover it up.

On top of that, I developed strange rashes with pimples full of pus around my eyes, nose and mouth – I got perioral dermatitis. Anyone who suffers from acne, perioral dermatitis or rosacea knows how much it affects their quality of life. I was desperate and sought medical help again. The doctor at the center prescribed Tetralisal for 8 weeks and a cortisone-based face cream. Not only did the antibiotics and cortisone destroy my entire immune system and ruin my sensitive skin, but the dermatitis returned months later. I decided never to take antibiotics or strong medications again. I was determined to find the cause of my problems and became increasingly convinced that my skin problems were a sign that something was wrong with my body.

I quickly discovered the LCHF (low carb, high fat) diet, consumed a massive amount of material, and altered my diet instantly. My skin has improved, not dramatically, but significantly. I succumbed and ate LCHF in large quantities since I was severely hooked to sugar, although I sometimes strayed and ate sugar. I felt wonderful, but now I understand that my insulin resistance produced inflammation that never fully healed, and that my skin couldn’t be totally free of problems. Anne Fernholm’s book on the hormone IGF-1 intrigued me, and I instantly saw the link. I also began intermittent fasting after reading Dr. Fung’s blog to improve insulin sensitivity and decrease inflammation: 16:8 plus a 24-hour fast once a week.

I’m serious, my skin was free of issues within FOUR days. For the first time in 15 years, I was able to get rid of my acne, and my perioral dermatitis went away for the first time in four years. I stopped after a month to rule out any significant variables that might explain this improvement, and ate regular meals without fasting And the issue reappeared! A high-protein diet and intermittent fasting may assist with acne issues for scientific reasons. High levels of the hormones insulin and IGF in the blood seem to be linked to these issues. They transmit signals to the skin’s sebaceous glands, causing them to multiply and clog pores.

LCHF and intermittent fasting decrease and regulate insulin and IGF levels, allowing the sebaceous glands to return to normal and cease being a source of acne.
