Tortilla Soup is a traditional Mexican soup that’s loaded with vegetables and spices. This delicious dish has become popular amongst Americans as it offers an easy way to eat more vegetables without sacrificing taste.

The “chicken tortilla soup” is a delicious and comforting meal that can be made in a variety of ways. This recipe uses chicken, but other meats such as beef or pork could also be used. The soup has been spiced with smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, and chipotle chile powder to give it a smoky, spicy flavor.

Smoky, Spicy Tortilla Soup

Most Mexican restaurants have tortilla soup, but I believe the greatest tortilla soup I’ve ever tasted was at Sol Cucina in Scottsdale.

This tasty tortilla soup reminded me of something you’d get at a high-end Mexican restaurant.

It had all of the lovely Mexican tastes, plus it was stuffed with shredded chicken.

When I lived in Arizona, this soup was often my go-to lunch.

Everyone had their own version, from the Hyatt to the Camelback Inn to Manuel’s to Los Sombreros.

Some had grilled corn, while some had a more hot Broth made with chicken and others had spicy jalapeos.

They were all excellent, but the Sol Cucina was just exceptional.

It had the richest tomato Broth made with chicken I’d ever tasted.

It was somewhat spicy and smoky, and instead of maize, Beans, black were used.

I wanted to make the soup again, and I believe I got close with the recipe. So let’s get started.

Soup with Smoky Spicy Tortillas Ingredients

  • Chicken
  • Broth made with chicken
  • Tomatoes
  • Garlic
  • Chile Powder from Chipotle
  • Cumin
  • Paprika that has been smoked
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Beans, black
  • Lime
  • Chips de Tortilla
  • Cheddar is a kind of cheese.
  • Cream of Tartar
  • Avocado

How to Make Spicy Tortilla Soup with Smoke

The soup I had tasted like if it had been cooking for an eternity, which to me indicates a slow cooker.

Cut the chicken breasts into bite-sized pieces and place them in the slow cooker to start.

Next add the low sodium Broth made with chicken.

Then add the tomatoes, garlic, Chipotle chili powder, Paprika that has been smoked, salt, pepper, cumin, Beans, black and lime juice and cook the soup on low heat for 6-7 hours.

When ready to serve, ladle the chicken soup into serving bowls and top each bowl with Chips de Tortilla, shredded Cheddar is a kind of cheese., diced avocado and a touch of Cream of Tartar.

It’s a completely filling supper on its own.

 

Observations on the Ingredients

Fresh tomatoes are excellent, but canned tomatoes work just as well in this chicken tortilla soup, and the tomato sauce in the can is an extra benefit.

Marzano tomatoes are my favorite in this recipe, not just because of their taste, but also because they hold up better over the extended cooking period.

For the spices, for an extra smoky taste, I used Chile Powder from Chipotle as well as Paprika that has been smoked, along with the juice of one lime.

This gives the soup a wonderful smokey flavor, almost as if it were cooked over an open fire.

I must say, it tasted quite similar to the delicious soup I had. Because of the simmering, it was rich, spicy, and smokey, with a significant depth of flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken Cut into little pieces to make it easier to eat.
  • 1 Quart Broth made with chicken, low sodium
  • It’s recommended to use 1 14.5 oz can of Marzano tomatoes with sauce.
  • 3 garlic cloves
  • 1 Tbsp Chile Powder from Chipotle
  • 2 teaspoon cumin
  • 3/4 Tbsp Paprika that has been smoked
  • a quarter teaspoon of salt
  • a quarter teaspoon of pepper
  • 1 14.5 oz can Beans, black Drained and rinsed
  • 1 lime, freshly squeezed
  • 1 Cup Chips de Tortilla
  • 1/2 Cup Cheddar is a kind of cheese. Shredded
  • 1 Diced Avocado
  • 2 Tbsp Cream of Tartar

Instructions

  • Place the chopped up chicken in a slow cooker set to low.

  • Add Broth made with chicken, tomatoes, garlic, Chile Powder from Chipotle, cumin, Paprika that has been smoked, salt, pepper, drained and rinsed Beans, black and the lime juice.  Allow to simmer together 7 hours.

  • Top each serving with Chips de Tortilla, shredded cheese, diced avocado and Cream of Tartar.
