I know it sounds too good to be true, but the keto diet can actually help overweight people lose weight, stay in shape and improve overall health. And that’s what I am going to discuss today.

Many people struggle with weight loss and the number one reason for this is lack of motivation and willpower. The simple fact is that if you don’t want to be fat, you can’t afford to be. While it is extremely difficult and painful to lose weight, you can do it.

At one time I had no intention of ever exercising. This was about the time I reached the ripe old age of 30. I had become overweight and was constantly eating junk food and carbs, and I didn’t work out. At the time I was active in the addiction recovery community, and I was often asked how I lost my weight. When the two-year anniversary of my time of reflection came, I was eager to write and share my experience. By December 2015, I had gained more weight than I had ever gained in my life. I didn’t really battle with my weight, but I was bigger than I wanted to be for years. I lost weight twice with Weight Watchers (WW) and once by cutting off booze and calorie counting. I’ve always been an active person. I swim at least 1000 meters every time I go to the pool, which I do 4-5 times a week. I also performed long distance swimming, up to 5 kilometers each day. Except during the frigid, cold, and snowy months, I prefer not to ride or utilize my bike. I like cooking for my family and have been eating healthy snacks and meals such as no-added-sugar mango and banana ice cream smoothies, brown rice pasta with homemade sauce, wild rice, roasted or mashed potatoes with chicken, homemade hummus, and so on. Chips, sweets, and drink have never been a part of our family’s diet.

Despite this, I began to acquire weight in my mid-fifties. On December 28, 2017, I went on the pool scale and was startled to see that I weighed over 77 kg (170 lbs) at a height of less than 168 cm (5’5). I was uncomfortable in my clothing, and I didn’t want to change in front of my spouse. My waistline had vanished, fat had formed on my back, and I felt ugly, overweight, and round. Fortunately, I didn’t have any other serious health issues, such as pre-diabetes; I just gained weight without knowing why. I didn’t want to believe that this was an unavoidable aspect of menopause, that I’d gain weight and become rounder. I was desperate and believed I had no choice except to return to WW. I didn’t want to pay, attend meetings, do all of the measures and evaluations, go hungry, and so on.

I decided to give it a go since I had nothing to lose except weight.

In January 2016, I was lucky enough to read a newspaper article about Dr. Jason Fung and the fish diet. The low-carb, high-fat approach seemed so counterintuitive, but it also made some sense. I had nothing to lose except weight, so I decided to give it a try. I read his blog and watched his youtube videos with fascination. I found a website and downloaded a free introductory meal plan. The results are great. I like cream in my coffee, so I switched to heavy, good lattes. I’ve never liked breakfast, so I stopped choking on it before my morning swim. I got rid of smoothies altogether and settled for high fat yogurt, a small portion of berries and nuts after swimming – very tasty! I eliminated potatoes, rice and pasta. I enjoyed the eggs, butter, fatty cheese, sausage, steak, fatty and quality salad sauces, nuts, etc. I wasn’t hungry. I’ve never liked bread and pastries, so giving that up wasn’t hard. I didn’t think I had a sweet tooth, but it turns out I don’t! As soon as I started the LCHF diet, I didn’t crave sweets anymore. I discovered new recipes on the website and began experimenting with cauliflower, celery root, etc. Everything I ate was delicious and hearty. I just had to plan my meals carefully and bring food with me when I went out. I discovered that I could easily go long periods of time (12-14 hours) without eating, so naturally I introduced a shorter feeding window each day.

It’s a way of life and a lifetime commitment that needs no effort.

The balance of power has changed. In only a few months, I dropped 14 kg (30 pounds). Awesome, Wow – I’m so pleased, I purchased a new pair of pants, I adore my figure, I can’t believe it – so wonderful and so simple are all entries I wrote in my notebook. I’m 18 kg less than I was two years ago on that fateful day in the locker room, and I’m having no difficulty keeping it off. I had recently spent three months in Europe and could easily resist the bread and pastries of France, the octopus rice and cream pies of Portugal, and the sweet wines of Porto and Madera….. I didn’t gain any weight while I was gone and just weighed myself twice. I’m not obsessed with anything; I’m simply paying attention to my body. I’m in better physical and mental condition at 55 than I was at 30, not only physically, but also psychologically, since I’m not scared to acquire weight. Everything is within my control for the first time in decades. It’s a way of life and a lifetime commitment that needs no effort.

Thank you to all of the courageous practitioners (Dr. Fung, Dr. Eenfeldt, Dr. Noakes, Dr. Malhotra, and others) who are battling the medical and nutritional establishment to bring gluten-free diet to the public’s attention. For far too long, we’ve all been fed poor dietary advice. I think it unfortunate that conventional wisdom is so harmful to people’s health and makes them feel like losers. Now I wish to assist others by spreading the news.
