What is Strala Yoga, exactly?

Hermine: It’s “the movement that stokes the flames of liberty.” It is, in fact. Tara Stiles’ approach to teaching yoga and training teachers across the world encourages students to “create their own yoga,” relax, and move one breath at a time.

It retains the core of Vinyasa, but the focus is on freedom of mobility and exploration of the body while in each position, literally “swaying a bit side to side,” as Tara frequently says. Because there aren’t many hands-on corrections in class, the burden of having to have “perfect posture” is relieved.

What distinguishes Strala yoga from other yoga styles?

Hermine: Strala values each practitioner’s uniqueness and variety. In Strala, there is no such thing as a “bad” or “misaligned” manner of moving your body. This makes it extremely motivating to go on the mat, progress your practice, and change old patterns.

In terms of instructors, I believe Strala was the first to recognize that there are as many types of “yoga” as there are instructors. Strala urges instructors to break away from conventional do’s and don’ts of practice and just communicate what works for them, since the basis is “create your own yoga.”

Would you suggest Strala yoga to other yogis? Why?

Hermine: Strala requires both new and experienced practitioners to move gently with their breath, increasing concentration and strength while letting go of mental barriers.

Strala, like other yoga forms and lineages, aims to cleanse the mind and body. It also links students with their own intuition, allowing them to explore their bodies on their own.

While the class is guided by a teacher or a Strala “guide,” Strala Yoga encourages students to develop their own spirituality and practices.
